The Jewel of Peru: Huayno
Huayno is a genre of Andean music and dance from the mountain range of South America, predominantly from Peru. Huayno not only forms part of a rich cultural identity but it is also one of Peru's most precious jewels. Music, dance and lyrics adopt a unique style and originality according to the region. Traditional and modern huayno singers are proud of their indigenous heritage. Usually, they perform wearing traditional garments decorated with colourful embroidery, depicting elements of natural life. Some verses are profoundly poetic exposing their relationship and integration with nature. Some lyrics reveal stories of struggle, memories of remarkable journeys, strength and survival. With admiration and respect to the jewel of Peru: huayno. May 2012, J. Luong
Following is a huayno song in Quechua inspired by a bird called 'pukupuku'.

"I am most grateful to all those who made the cultural and artistic event possible, organised to raise emergency funds to support the search of Omar, who disappeared on 13th March 2012, due to overflow of Toropaccha river, San Ramon town, Chanchamayo province, Junin. The event offered a varied programme of music, dance and puppetry. All the proceeds from food and drink sales and some donations make the total of £325, and will be sent within the following days to relatives of Omar, who are coordinating the search. I must say that this sum will be of much help; but I believe more help will be required to continue the search.
