Once again, Peruvian culture formed part of the colourful and vibrant Chinese New Year celebration. The event marked the year of the Snake.
The Peruvian performance was introduced by two children wearing traditional costumes, a message in Quechua: 'Paqariyku, Wiñayku, Llamk'ayku Siminchikrayku, Kawsayninchikrayku' ('We are born, we live and work for our language and cultures') and Hatary Llajta playing a mixture of lively huaynos and carnivals.
Baila Peru with the support of collaborators showcased the festive and fresh dance festejo, representing the Afro-Peruvian culture of the black coastal population. The dance was performed by adults and children combining energy and passion. An essential element of this dynamic performance was the Afro-Peruvian drum box, el cajón, played by Alejandro Reyes.
The performance was complemented by the presence of the Mochica Princess, the Condor and traditional costumes from Cajamarca, Huancayo, La Libertad and Cusco.
Baila Peru would like to thank the organisers, Chinawest International Productions Ltd. for the opportunity to be part of this major celebration and to all participants and collaborators for their contribution and talent.

 Coca leaves on Andean tapestry
Green, gentle coca leaf, essence of my diet
However, sweet or bitter, I love you
Loyal companion in my sorrows
Together with my herd and my charango
Among the Quechua and Aymara people
You grew like the wild herb
A wicked brother tainted your fate forever
bleached your leaf and brought death
